This week's edition of News in 5 will be published mid-week due to the holidays. Nonetheless, I didn't want to delay sending out a list of upcoming local happenings.
Many of this week's events are free or low-cost and are suitable for children and families looking for things to do during the winter break.

Talk of the Town: Christmastide Tour - Colonial Williamsburg - Daily through Jan. 1, 2022 at 10:00 am. Features a guided tour throughout Colonial Williamsburg focusing on the spirit of the Christmastide season. Ticket + Good Neighbor Pass or CW Admission required. See website for details.
Tween Game Lounge - James City County Library in Williamsburg (7770 Croaker Rd). Monday, Dec. 27 - Thursday, Dec. 30. This casual winter break drop-in event features board games, puzzles, Minecraft and more. For ages 9-12. 9:00 am - 8:00 pm.
Science Shows: The Magic of Science and Forces and Motion - Watch science in motion at The Magic of Science, a fun show in which everyone in the audience and on stage can become a magician. In Forces and Motion, the audience is treated to an inspiring show featuring "thrilling demonstrations" about physics and how it impacts our everyday lives. 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Included in museum admission.
Busch Gardens Christmas Town - Williamsburg. Daily through Jan. 2, 2022. Hours and ticket prices vary; see website for details.
Virginia Living Museum Nature Nights Holiday Lights - Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. Thursday - Sunday Nights through Dec. 30. 5:30 - 8:30 pm. Featuring an outdoor trail adorned with lights and the holiday spirit. $9 for VLM members, $12 for non-members; free for children 2 and under.
Christmastide in Virginia - Jamestown Settlement and American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Dec. 18-31. Offers a glimpse into 17th and 18th-century holiday festivities, music and traditions. Admission is free for residents of York County, James City County and Williamsburg. See website for additional details.
Holiday Story Walk - Merchants Square in Williamsburg. A holiday walking event geared toward children and families. Read about the Christmas adventures of Nicholas Duck while walking through Merchants Square. Available until the end of December. See website for additional details.
Celebration in Lights - Newport News Park. Features over a million lights displayed throughout a two-mile stretch amongst the woods in the park. New this year are magical trees, candy-themed displays and more. 5:30 - 10:00 pm nightly through New Year's Day. $12 per car Monday-Thursday; $15 per car Friday-Sunday.
Lights at the Fountain - City Center at Oyster Point in Newport News. Nightly from 5:00-9:00 pm through Jan 1. Features a holiday experience showcasing lights, decorations and snow falling set to music. Free admission; free parking.
ARTechLights - Brooks Crossing in Newport News. Nightly from 5:00-9:00 pm through Jan. 1. Features an animated light and sound show on the holiday tree every half hour with synchronized music and holiday decor.
Ice Skating at Liberty Ice Pavilion - Colonial Williamsburg. Daily through Feb. 27, 2022. Features ice-skating and a concession stand that sells hot chocolate, hot cider and other treats. See the full ice rink schedule here.
Water Fowl Watch - York River State Park 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Bring binoculars, cameras and/or other viewing devices to watch the arrival of wild ducks on the river. Included with standard parking fee or park admission.
Winter in the Valley - Hennage Auditorium at the Art Museum of Colonial Williamsburg. Features Christmas songs and family stories from the 18th century. $5 program ticket plus museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass). 11:00 am.
Tweens and Teens Winter Craft: DIY Snow Globe - James City County Library in Williamsburg. Pre-registration is required. Participants will be able to create their own snow globe and supplies will be provided. For ages 10-18. 2:00 - 4:00 pm.
Skulls & Skins - York River State Park. Visit the park and meet a ranger who will teach about the ways animals use their fur for comfort and camouflage. 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Included with standard parking or admission fee.
Christmas Trees and Museum Treasures - Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. This new program features a Trail of Trees with themed trees and an illustrated guide to hunt for art objects related to the Twelve Days of Christmas. A 16-foot Folk Art Tree decorated with more than 2,000 handcrafted ornaments is also featured in the museum, and holiday cookies and hot cocoa are available for sale in the Museum Cafe. Included with museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass). 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
Christmas and the Constitution - Hennage Auditorium at the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. This theatrical performance highlights the battle between James Madison and Alexander Hamilton over the writing of the Federalist Papers during the Christmas season of 1787. Art museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass) + $5 event ticket. 11:00 am.
Noon Years Eve - Virginia Living Museum. Features crafts, activities and animal enrichments throughout the day. Tickets must be reserved ahead of time. This event is expected to sell out. 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. $21.95 for adults and children 13 and up; $14.95 for children 3-12 and free for children 2 and under.
Joy in the Morning - Features a music-filled message of hope that brings light to the struggles and triumphs of 18th-century African Americans. %5 program ticket + museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass). 11:00 am.
Noon Year's Eve in the Park - Freedom Park (5537 Centerville Rd.) Features a hot chocolate bar, outdoor fire and family-themed scavenger hunt. No admission fee or pre-registration needed. 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm.
A Season Full of Holidays - Hennage Auditorium at Colonial Williamsburg. Features performances of music associated with the holidays from Thanksgiving to Twelfth Night by Timothy Seaman and Thomas Abernathy. 4:30 pm. $10 program ticket + museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass).
Busch Gardens New Year's Eve Fireworks - This special New Year's Eve fireworks presentation will begin at 9:15 pm. Busch Gardens Christmas Town pass (or membership) required.
Bobby BlackHat New Year's Eve Blues Spectacular - This family-friendly event features "Virginia's Blues Ambassador" and recording artist Bobby BlackHat. The event will be held under the big tent on the lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Masks must be worn by all guests during this event in accordance with updated CDC guidelines. 6:00 - 8:00 pm. $35 VIP early entry; $25 general admission.
New Year's Eve Community Celebration - CultureFix has announced that it will offer a free community New Year's Eve event in the big tent on the lawn of the Colonial Williamsburg art museums. No tickets are required, but this event is standing room only. The celebration will feature live music by The Revelation Band, a large screen to watch the NYC ball drop and food and drinks, including beer and wine, for purchase. No outside alcohol is permitted. Hogmanay! Hogmanay! - Hennage Auditorium at the Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg. Features a special New Year performance by John Turner and Kelly Kennedy. 3:00 pm. $10 program ticket + museum admission (or Good Neighbor pass).
